Franziska Markowitsch

Franziska Markowitsch studied Romance languages and school music, specialising in the flute, in Berlin and Geneva, as well as opera singing at the Leipzig University of Music under Prof. Regina Werner-Dietrich.
She was a scholarship holder of the DAAD and the Stuttgart Bach Academy and attended numerous masterclasses. She also received significant guidance from Tanja Ariana Baumgartner and Sami Kustaloglu.

Following the completion of her studies in 2007, Franziska Markowitsch was offered a permanent position with the RIAS Chamber Choir. Since then, she has taken part in numerous concerts with the choir both at home and abroad, as well as in chamber concerts, world premieres and CD recordings, as both an ensemble singer and a soloist. 
In addition, the mezzo-soprano maintains a busy concert schedule and has worked with conductors such as Philippe Herreweghe, Eric Ericsson, Leonardo Garcia Alarcon, Hans-Christoph Rademann and many others, as well as orchestras including the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra and the Orchestre des Champs-Elysées. 
She regularly performs the alto parts in works by Bach and Handel. She is also increasingly taking on roles from the Romantic repertoire.
She has a keen interest in recital performances, which she presents with the pianist Liana Vlad, the Alato Trio and the Duo Arcadie. 
Following a teaching post in voice training at the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music in Berlin, she was awarded a PhD in instrumental and vocal pedagogy in 2025 at the University of Music in Freiburg. The publication of her doctoral thesis, entitled ‘A Career in Professional Choral Singing – Paths and Detours to a Complex Profession’, is planned for 2026.
